Brief

Back to happier times

Years of isolation and the pressures of modern life have sparked a growing cultural movement toward the playful and the familiar. Playful nostalgia functions as a coping mechanism, a form of escapism, and a light-hearted emotional response to modern stress. By allowing people to have fun with the things they remember from childhood, it bridges generations through shared joyful memory and offers comfort in an increasingly fast-paced and impersonal world.

A cultural shift toward play and nostalgia is emerging as a direct and deeply human response to modern uncertainty.

Context

Context

Interrupted by whimsy

Whimsy is a mindset for enjoying life by making ordinary objects feel special, everyday moments feel memorable, and adding playfulness and energy to life. Whimsy becomes a technique for reopening emotional channels to surprise and emotional immediacy, qualities that are often dulled by structure, screens, and repetition.

By developing daily rituals imbued with whimsy, it breaks the monotony of routine and allows for small interruptions in the standardized rhythms of adult life.

Opportunity = Whimsy transforms ordinary moments into meaningful interruptions, giving play a place in adult life.

Context

Memories built on moments

Certain sights, sounds, smells, experiences, and the places that hold them leave a mark. These “gumball memories” and candy-coated vibes are emotional markers that carry joy, anticipation, and wonder long after the moment has passed. In the everyday, moments like these are rare. They are the interruptions we remember most, and the ones we find ourselves reaching for when the routine sets in.

How can an object bring a sense of play and joy within the routines of everyday life?

Concept

A common tabletop object that can imbue whimsy into everyday life.

Process

Ideation

I began by iterating different forms using parametric design code, allowing for easy manipulation across a range of variables.

Process

Development

Iterations were 3D printed (FDM and resin) to explore varying levels of detail and material performance, then handled and interacted with to test viability in multiple use cases and environments. From there the selected forms were molded and cast, allowing the same form to be reproduced across different materials depending on the application.

Solution

A small celebration to brighten the everyday

Adult life leaves little room for play. The responsibilities stack, the routines set in, the spaces homogenize, the palette neutralizes, and the objects around us follow suit. Nostalgia is one of the most powerful emotional tools available to a designer, and one of the least used in the objects we interact with daily, despite the fact that designs that evoke memory, comfort, and playfulness are the ones that resonate most.

Le Fleuret reintroduces play and whimsy into adult life by transforming a common table top object into a small but meaningful interruption in the routines of everyday through joyful, nostalgic aesthetics.

Le Fleuret is a purposeful interruption, designed to bring whimsy and nostalgia back into the everyday.

Design Decisions

For colors

A vibrant, spontaneous palette with an unapologetic use of color and contrast. Each hue carries a candy-coated familiarity, reflecting the vivid and saturated memories of childhood.

Flowering forms

The six forms take the shape of flowers in bloom. Like cut flowers, they share a quiet beauty and carry an innate awareness of time, one that the candle above them makes impossible to ignore.

Full forms

Le Fleuret leans into the silhouettes of childhood, embracing joyful aesthetics through rounded forms, exaggerated volumes, and chunky contours.

The rounded shapes allow the user to bring in an element of the past while being playful with their decor.
